Bangkok: From his days as a goalkeeper for the Thai national team to his current role as a mentor and coach, Kawin Thamsatchanan, fondly known as "Tong," has transitioned from a football legend to a developer of future talent. Participating in the AFC 'B' License coaching course, a collaborative effort between the Football Association of Thailand and BYD, Kawin is further clarifying his coaching role, embracing the journey from player to coach with a focus on building the next generation.
According to Thai News Agency, Kawin reflects on his football career, noting that while he was once a "receiver" of advice and training, his transition to coaching required a shift in mindset. A talented player does not inherently make a good coach, as transferring knowledge involves a distinct discipline. Coaching training serves as a crucial tool, complementing his on-field experience and allowing him to apply it systematically and effectively.
He emphasizes the importance of developing a strong youth base in Thai football, acknowledging that not every child will become a professional footballer. Kawin believes that a broader base increases the chances of discovering and developing true potential. He asserts that success in football relies on the development of on-field skills, physical fitness, a stable mental state, and attitude.
Drawing from his experiences in Thailand, Europe, and Japan, Kawin notes that dedication and a winning mindset are universal in football training. He emphasizes the importance of taking every detail seriously, instilling in younger players the philosophy that training like a winner is essential for victory. Kawin's coaching style balances strictness with understanding, adapting to the age and nature of each player to effectively transfer knowledge.
Kawin aspires to pursue higher coaching education, including the AFC 'A' License and specialized training for goalkeeping coaches. Currently an assistant goalkeeping coach for the Thai national team, he is also developing his own goalkeeping academy to pass on experience and elevate coaching standards for Thai youth.
For Kawin, professionalism extends beyond the field, encompassing aspects like discipline, rest, and responsibility. He concludes with confidence that support from BYD and Rev© Automotive will be pivotal in advancing Thai football infrastructure, highlighting that investing in coaches is the most impactful investment for the future of Thai youth.
