Bangkok: The Department of Tourism has launched the UP Skill program, an initiative designed to enhance career opportunities for personnel within the tourism sector. This program aims to address the skill gap and labor shortages affecting the tourism industry by upgrading the capabilities of workers to meet current market demands.
According to Thai News Agency, the event titled "Developing Collaborative Networks to Enhance Potential and Create Career Opportunities for Tourism Personnel" was organized by the Department of Tourism to foster collaboration between government entities, the private sector, and educational institutions. The goal is to develop a skilled workforce that aligns with the needs of the evolving labor market.
Ms. Woratheera Suwannasorn, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Tourism, emphasized the vital role of tourism in the country's economy. She noted the increasing expectations of tourists for high-quality service, which has resulted in a shortage of skilled personnel, particularly in the hotel and accommodation sectors. To address this, the Department has initiated the "Tourism Personnel Capacity Building Activity to Address Labor Shortages," focusing on upgrading skills in the hotel and accommodation business to meet both current and future demands.
To improve service quality and strengthen Thailand's tourism industry, three professional development courses have been introduced: Housekeeping Staff Development, Front Office Staff Development, and Food and Beverage Service Staff Development. These courses aim to prepare tourism personnel for the industry's evolving requirements.
The event also featured a forum titled "The Future of Thai Tourism Personnel in the Smart Hospitality Era: New Skills, New Opportunities," where experts discussed industry trends, essential modern workplace skills, and the integration of technology and artificial intelligence with exceptional service. The forum aimed to prepare tourism personnel for the smart hospitality era.
A significant aspect of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Tourism and various stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector, and educational institutions. This MOU aims to enhance human resource development in the industry to meet labor market demands. Additionally, a Business Matching session provided a platform for tourism entrepreneurs and personnel to network, exchange employment information, and explore potential collaborations.
Ms. Woratheera Suwannasorn highlighted the Department's commitment to transforming Thai tourism personnel for the future through cross-sector collaboration. This initiative intends to address labor shortages, enhance service quality, and boost the long-term competitiveness of Thailand's tourism industry. The Department hopes that integrated cooperation from all sectors will be instrumental in resolving the tourism labor shortage in Thailand while raising service standards and building confidence in the Thai tourism sector across the region.
