Havana: The United States has issued a warning to American citizens in Cuba, advising them to exercise caution due to ongoing protests against the U.S. government and potential shortages of power and fuel. The warning comes in the wake of a blockade imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on oil shipments to the island nation.
According to Thai News Agency, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba released a warning on February 3, 2026, highlighting the increasing instability of Cuba's national power grid. The embassy noted that unscheduled power outages have become a daily issue across the country, including in the capital, Havana. These disruptions are affecting essential services such as water supply, lighting, food refrigeration, and communications.
The embassy further explained that fuel shortages are severely impacting transportation, leading to long queues at gas stations. Businesses dependent on power generators are facing challenges in maintaining operations. In light of these issues, American citizens in Cuba are advised to stockpile essential supplies like fuel, water, and food, and to ensure their mobile phones are fully charged to prepare for potential difficulties.
Additionally, the warning emphasized that American citizens currently in Cuba or those planning to travel there should be aware of the increasing denial of visa applications and the rise in state-sponsored protests targeting the United States.
The recent U.S. government decision to block all oil shipments to Cuba, including those from its ally Venezuela, has exacerbated the situation. This blockade has resulted in increased food and transportation costs, prolonged power outages, and a severe shortage of fuel. President Trump has also threatened to impose tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba, further intensifying the crisis.
