Geneva: Delegations from Ukraine and the United States announced they have developed a framework peace deal that revises President Donald Trump’s initial peace proposal, which Ukraine and its allies deemed overly favorable to Russia.
According to Thai News Agency, the delegates issued a joint statement after discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, noting the productivity of the talks, which are set to continue for several more days. Details on unresolved issues, such as Ukraine’s security assurances against Russian threats, were not disclosed.
The White House released a separate statement highlighting that the new framework offers enhanced security guarantees for Ukraine, with the Ukrainian delegation affirming it aligns with Ukraine’s national interests. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, leading the US delegation, mentioned that they managed to narrow down aspects of Trump’s 28-point peace proposal, although issues like NATO’s role remain unaddressed.
Previously, Trump had set a November 27 deadline for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept his peace proposal, which involved Ukraine ceding territory occupied by Russia, imposing military size restrictions, and abandoning its NATO membership aspirations.
The talks turned tense, with Trump expressing displeasure via social media over what he perceived as Ukraine’s lack of appreciation for US efforts, while Europe continued purchasing Russian oil. Rubio later spoke with reporters, claiming the talks were the most beneficial for Ukraine since Trump’s return to office for a second term, suggesting any other president might have terminated them. Andriy Yermak, leading the Ukrainian delegation, awkwardly thanked Trump at the meeting’s start, while Zelensky later recorded a video from an undisclosed location expressing gratitude to the US leader.
These discussions occur as Ukraine endures a critical period, with Russia advancing on the frontlines and using drones and missiles to target power infrastructure, leaving millions without electricity in freezing conditions. Concurrently, Zelensky faces domestic pressure following corruption revelations involving several ministers and associates.
