Vice chair of anti-corruption agency offers to resign following death of senior official

The vice chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) offered to resign Tuesday following the death of a senior official who was involved in investigating politically sensitive cases. Vice Chief Chung Seung-yun expressed his intention to step down as soon as he finalizes the process to have the official recognized as having died in the line of duty, according to the ACRC. Until recently, the ACRC official had served as acting chief of the agency's anti-corruption bureau and oversaw inquiries into politically sensitive cases, including first lady Kim Keon Hee's acceptance of a luxury handbag and opposition leader Lee Jae-myung's use of a helicopter after he came under a knife attack in January. The official was found dead in an apartment in the central administrative city of Sejong with a suicide note last Thursday. Opposition parties have stressed the need to hold a hearing to reveal the truth behind the official's death, claiming the government had pressured the official, eventuall y leading to his death.
