Hanoi: The Vietnam Volleyball Federation has ordered an investigation into the gender of its volleyball players in response to suspicions or complaints, particularly focusing on national-level competitions.
According to Thai News Agency, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) plans to implement gender verification procedures for female athletes in all national competitions. A report published on the volleyball website vietnam.vn reveals that starting in 2026, the VFV will employ chromosome testing to confirm the eligibility of female athletes when necessary. This testing process requires prior approval from the VFV, and applicants must pay a deposit of 10 million Vietnamese Dong (approximately 12,008 Thai Baht) to the competition organizers. The organizing committee will then arrange for gender confirmation at certified medical facilities or organizations.
The move towards gender verification follows past controversies involving Vietnamese female volleyball players, such as Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, known as "Refrigerator" among Thai fans, and Dang Thi Hong, nicknamed "Freezer." Both athletes encountered significant public scrutiny regarding their gender identities. Consequently, neither player has registered to compete in the current Vietnamese volleyball league season. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen has transitioned to a coaching role, while Dang Thi Hong announced her retirement from the sport at the young age of 20 to pursue higher education.
