Voter Participation Guidelines for Upcoming Elections and Referendums Explained

Bangkok: The Election Commission has clarified the procedures for eligible voters who are unable to participate in the upcoming general election or referendum. The law mandates that voters notify the authorities of their inability to vote to avoid restrictions on their rights.

According to Thai News Agency, eligible voters must report their inability to vote in the parliamentary election between February 1-7, 2026, or within a week after the election day, from February 9-15, 2026. Similarly, those who cannot vote in the referendum must notify their reasons before February 7, 2026, or within a week after the referendum day, which is from February 9-15, 2026.

Voters can notify the district or local registrar in person or authorize someone to submit the notification on their behalf. The Election Commission has also provided electronic channels for reporting, including the Smart Vote application, the government application.

The failure to vote without notifying the reason can lead to restrictions on voter rights, emphasizing the importance of adhering to these guidelines.
