Bangkok: Mr. Wan Muhammad Nor Matha, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister, highlighted the necessity of continuing peace talks alongside suppression efforts to address the unrest in the southern border provinces. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased paramilitary soldiers and urged relevant agencies to expedite bringing the perpetrators to justice.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wan Muhammad Nor emphasized that while the violence may complicate the peace talks, dialogue remains essential and should be pursued in conjunction with suppression measures. He considers this dual approach as the most appropriate and sustainable solution. He also warned against neglecting issues like drug trafficking and smuggled oil, which could potentially fund insurgent groups in the region.

He stated that the potential escalation of martial law in Narathiwat province is a decision for operational authorities, who must choose the most suitable legal tools for the situation. The government and officials were urged not to overlook criminal issues, such as illegal oil trading and drug trafficking, as these are significant problems that could be linked to funding insurgent activities.

Mr. Wan Muhammad Nor also addressed the progress of meetings by the government's special representatives to resolve issues in the southern border provinces. The scheduling of these meetings, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew, depends on ongoing situations and should occur at least every two months.

In response to criticism regarding the government's prioritization of the southern region's issues, Mr. Wan Muhammad Nor assured that all parties, including the Prime Minister, are actively working on solutions. He expressed hope for positive outcomes through cooperation and coordination across sectors, including the involvement of local communities.
