Warning of Online Scams Targeting Flood Victims in Southern Thailand

Bangkok: The ongoing flood crisis in southern Thailand has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, creating vulnerabilities that online scammers are exploiting. The Sure Before Share Center has issued a warning, highlighting seven prevalent scams that are circulating to prey on those seeking assistance during this challenging time.

According to Thai News Agency, one of the primary scams involves tricking individuals into transferring funds under the guise of flood relief donations. Scammers establish fraudulent donation channels, falsely claiming that all proceeds will go directly to assist those affected by the floods. A notable example occurred in 2019, following the floods in Ubon Ratchathani Province. In this instance, scammers impersonated Mr. Bin Banleurit, the Special Activities Manager of the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, by creating a fake Facebook page to solicit donations meant for flood victims.

The Sure Before Share Center urges the public to remain vigilant and cautious when responding to requests for donations or aid, as these scams not only exacerbate the suffering of those impacted by the floods but also divert critical resources away from genuine relief efforts.
