Abhisit Thanks Songkhla Residents for Support, Emphasizes Need for Strict Election Oversight

Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and a candidate for Prime Minister, expressed gratitude to the people of Songkhla for their support, while urging the Election Commission to address issues of vote buying during advance voting.

According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit commented on a NIDA poll showing over 40% support for the Democrat Party in Songkhla. He highlighted his recent visit to Hat Yai, where he discussed policies aimed at revitalizing the area and addressing regional challenges. Abhisit, alongside Korn Chatikavanij, emphasized the importance of strict oversight by the Election Commission to prevent vote buying, particularly during advance voting.

Abhisit addressed concerns raised by Nipit Intarasombat, a Democrat Party candidate, regarding vote buying allegations in Phatthalung province. He noted that many individuals have the initial "A," and suggested directing questions to Nipit for further details. Abhisit expressed hope for fair elections and emphasized the importance of restoring political integrity and preventing the erosion of public trust.

Despite concerns about election financing, Abhisit stated he was not overly worried, citing the determination of Songkhla's residents. He encouraged voters to make choices beneficial for the country and cautioned against divisive tactics related to patriotism and military issues. Abhisit called for political unity in handling foreign affairs, underscoring the need for cooperation among parties.

In addressing strategies to win over the undecided voters, Abhisit encouraged the public to reconsider the Democrat Party, suggesting that dissatisfaction with current candidates might indicate an opportunity for renewed support. He invited voters to reevaluate the party's offerings and potential improvements.
