Abhisit Unveils Strategic Plan for Southern Thailand, Aiming for Rubber Price of 80 Baht

Lumpini park: Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, revealed the party's strategy for winning over voters in the South, emphasizing a realistic approach to raising agricultural product prices. He also expressed opposition to large-scale projects that could jeopardize national security and offered suggestions to the Election Commission regarding facilitating voter turnout.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Abhisit stated that the party aims to push rubber prices above the guaranteed price, targeting 80 baht per kilogram, through value-added processing and national-level negotiations. Regarding palm oil, the focus will be on promoting a "comprehensive palm oil law" to ensure long-term fairness for farmers.

Regarding infrastructure, Mr. Abhisit presented an approach that differed from the large-scale projects currently trending, focusing instead on the needs of local people. Regarding the land bridge issue, Mr. Abhisit pointed out that the study found it to be not cost-effective from a business perspective and would not actually save shipping time.

Regarding the Thai Canal project, concerns have been raised about its security impact. It is argued that digging the canal amidst heightened tensions between major powers could potentially draw conflict into Thailand. This proposes a new alternative by connecting the rail and motorway systems to the "Penang Port," an existing infrastructure that can be immediately utilized. This would help farmers export their products more quickly without sacrificing heavy industry in the area.

When asked by reporters about the proposed system for voting in both the parliamentary elections and the referendum, where voters are encouraged to register once and receive three ballots, Mr. Abhisit responded that he was unaware of the Election Commission's (EC) guidelines. "However, I would like to ask the EC to make the process as convenient as possible for the public, minimizing confusion - that would be ideal," he added.
