Abhisit Vejjajiva Advocates Clean Air Legislation to Combat PM 2.5 Pollution

Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, representing the Democrat Party as its prime ministerial candidate, has unveiled a comprehensive policy framework aimed at tackling the persistent issue of PM 2.5 air pollution. In a meeting with the public at Lumpini Park, Abhisit detailed his approach to improving urban air quality, focusing on legislative measures, incentives, and regional cooperation.

According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit emphasized the importance of enacting three key pieces of legislation to address environmental challenges systematically. The proposed Draft Clean Air Act aims to secure the fundamental right of citizens to breathe clean air. In addition, Circular Economy laws are intended to minimize waste and pollution at their source, while climate change laws are designed to prepare for future environmental challenges.

A significant aspect of Abhisit's plan involves incentives to reduce pollution in the transportation sector. The Democrat Party suggests implementing a "low-cost transportation network" by integrating the BTS Skytrain and bus systems, with fares ranging from 5 to 30 baht. This initiative aims to encourage city dwellers to rely more on public transportation, thereby contributing to a reduction in Bangkok's air pollution.

In the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, Abhisit proposes a blend of positive measures and penalties. This includes oversight throughout the supply chain, funding, and technology support for farmers to manage agricultural waste without resorting to burning. Additionally, mechanisms would be created to discourage the purchase of products originating from polluting production processes.

Abhisit also highlighted the need for regional cooperation to effectively address transboundary air pollution. By leveraging Thailand's position as the chair of ASEAN, he proposed making clean air a "regional priority" to facilitate collaboration with neighboring countries in reducing pollution hotspots.
