Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, a key political figure and leader of the Democrat Party, has raised alarms over the pervasive interference by politicians and senators in independent organizations, suggesting that this meddling could potentially lead to the misuse of freedom to undermine governmental stability.

According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit delivered his remarks during an academic seminar titled "Crisis of Trust in Independent Organizations: Origins and Solutions," co-hosted by the House of Representatives' Committee on Judiciary and the King Prajadhipok Institute. The seminar aimed to explore the erosion of trust in these organizations. Abhisit emphasized that the crisis has reached a critical point, with efforts underway to seize control of the Senate to strategically place individuals in key independent organizations, many of whom have ties to executive politicians.

In his address, Abhisit underscored the necessity of independent organizations to provide oversight over politicians, citing the lack of self-regulation among political entities. He proposed constitutional amendments to address issues related to the origins of the Senate and independent organizations. Abhisit also pointed out the need to rectify distorted mechanisms, such as the discretionary power of the House Speaker in handling investigations of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Abhisit warned of the dangers of politicized control over the Senate, which could lead to the appointment of individuals to independent organizations with the intention of shielding the executive branch from scrutiny. This scenario, according to Abhisit, undermines democratic principles, which require accountability and transparency. He expressed concerns that such actions equate to leveraging freedom of speech as a tool to destabilize the government, thus deviating from the core tenets of democracy beyond electoral processes.
