Abhisit Vejjajiva Leads Democrat Party’s Initiative to Combat Air Pollution at Lumphini Park

Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and prime ministerial candidate, took center stage at Lumphini Park to address public concerns over the city's worsening air pollution, particularly the severe PM 2.5 levels. He emphasized the party's dedication to implementing sustainable solutions via legislative measures, incentive structures, and regional partnerships.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Abhisit outlined a comprehensive environmental policy with a focus on three critical pieces of legislation. These include the Clean Air Act, aimed at securing citizens' fundamental right to breathe safe air; the Circular Economy Act, designed to minimize waste and pollution from the start; and the Climate Change Act, targeting long-term environmental challenges.

The Democrat Party also unveiled a strategy to curb private car usage by enhancing public transportation. This involves integrating the BTS Skytrain and bus systems into a unified network, with fares ranging from 5-30 baht, to promote public transport usage and reduce air pollution across Bangkok.

In the agricultural domain, Mr. Abhisit proposed a dual approach of incentives and penalties. Farmers would receive financial and technological support to adopt alternative agricultural waste management practices, while mechanisms would be established to discourage the purchase of goods from polluting production processes.

The issue of transboundary air pollution was also highlighted, with a call for international cooperation. Mr. Abhisit suggested that Thailand leverage its role as ASEAN Chair to prioritize clean air on the regional agenda, fostering collaboration with neighboring countries to significantly reduce pollution sources.
