Vancouver: Air India has been urged to look into an incident involving a pilot who was found to be intoxicated before a scheduled takeoff from Canada. According to Thai News Agency, Canada's transport authority has requested Air India to conduct a thorough investigation after an Air India pilot failed a breathalyzer test at Vancouver International Airport. The incident was reported when police at the airport asked the pilot to disembark from the aircraft to undergo a breathalyzer test. The test returned a negative result twice. Despite this, Canadian transport authorities have taken the situation seriously, prompting them to write to Air India. They have requested the airline to submit the investigation results and outline preventive measures by January 26th. In response, Air India has confirmed the delay of its flight from Vancouver to New Delhi on December 23, 2025, due to the incident. The airline replaced the pilot for that flight and has suspended the involved crew member pending investigation. Air In dia has assured that if company regulations were violated, strict disciplinary action would be enforced following their policy. The incident comes at a time when Air India, co-owned by Tata Group and Singapore Airlines since 2022, is under rigorous aviation safety scrutiny. This follows a tragic crash on June 12, 2025, involving a Boeing Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London, which resulted in 242 fatalities on board and significant casualties on the ground. This has led to increased oversight, with the Civil Aviation Authority of India recently issuing warnings to pilots regarding the operation of aircraft with known issues.
