Alcohol Sales Surge 40% During New Year’s Holiday Amid Extended Hours

Bangkok: Alcohol sales saw a 40% increase, taking advantage of extended sales hours during the New Year's holiday. Businesses emphasized the importance of not drinking and driving and strictly prohibited sales to minors.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanakorn Kuptajit, the former president of the Thai Alcoholic Beverage Business Association, disclosed that following the relaxation of the 2 PM-5 PM sales ban for 180 days, licensed restaurants are projected to experience a 30-40% boost in sales during the New Year and Songkran festivals. This growth is largely attributed to an increase in foreign tourists and clearer regulations.

Despite the surge in sales, there remains a strong focus on preventing drunk driving and prohibiting alcohol sales to minors. Previously, alcohol sales were impacted by major floods in the south and border issues, which led to a decrease in tourist numbers.

The business sector is also advancing subsidiary legislation under the new Alcohol Control Act, addressing zoning, advertising, and service hours, alongside considering the Progressive Liquor Act. This is anticipated to further enhance the tourism and related service sectors.
