Anti-Fraudulent Scheme: Tricking Students Into Scanning Their Faces in Exchange for Free Mobile SIM Cards

Bangkok: The Anti-Online Fraud Center, in collaboration with the Central Investigation Bureau, has successfully launched operation 'SAFE DOI BOY,' resulting in the arrest of a gang involved in a deceptive scheme targeting students. The operation uncovered a fraudulent activity where students were lured into participating in a 'free SIM card giveaway' under false pretenses. Unbeknownst to them, their facial scans were used to register fake SIM cards intended for sale to scammers.

According to Thai News Agency, the operation was a coordinated effort between the Anti-Online Fraud Center and the Central Investigation Bureau aimed at dismantling the network responsible for this fraud. By exploiting students' trust, the gang managed to create a significant number of fake SIM cards which could have been utilized for various illicit activities. The authorities' swift action in apprehending the perpetrators highlights the ongoing challenge of combating digital fraud schemes.
