Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul has authorized the military to strengthen border defenses and enhance its arsenal following a landmine incident in Sisaket province. The move aims to prevent future incidents and bolster security at the border.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the landmine incident involving soldiers in Sisaket, emphasizing that it was not a result of a conflict. He noted that landmine clearance is ongoing in controlled areas, and such incidents can occur unexpectedly. Anutin highlighted the importance of heightened vigilance and clearly defined military routes to prevent soldiers from straying into unsafe areas. Citing his experience at Ta Kwai Temple and Chong Chom points, he reiterated the need for soldiers to adhere to designated paths to mitigate landmine risks.
Anutin also addressed concerns about potential unrest along the border caused by Cambodian youths, stating that an agreement exists at the government-to-government level to prevent such provocations. He acknowledged that public provocation is possible and noted the role of social media in escalating tensions. In response to queries about the effectiveness of building border fences, Anutin confirmed that reinforcing military capabilities, including weaponry, has been approved in principle.
Regarding the revocation of MOU 44, Anutin indicated that the Ministry of Defense, the National Security Council, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been tasked with addressing the matter. He stated that there is no specific timeframe for the process, emphasizing that it could be done using the Cabinet's authority without parliamentary approval. Anutin also mentioned the ongoing processing of MOU 43, which he views as beneficial in establishing Thailand's territorial integrity.
The landmine incident in Sisaket, which occurred in an area under Thai control, was not linked to any clashes, according to Anutin. The latest ceasefire agreement mandates that all parties remain in their current positions, reinforcing the need for strict adherence to established protocols to ensure safety and stability along the border.
