Samut sakhon: Ban Phaeo salted fish has been officially recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product by the Department of Intellectual Property, adding significant value to Thailand's agricultural output and paving the way for global market expansion.
According to Thai News Agency, this recent GI registration marks the fourth for Samut Sakhon province, following Ban Phaeo Longan, Ban Phaeo Aromatic Coconut, and Ban Phaeo Aromatic Coconut Blossom Nectar. The recognition underscores the quality and distinctive characteristics of products rooted in local wisdom, aiming to elevate them to premium status and create sustainable income for local communities.
Ms. Oramon Sapthaveetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, highlighted that Ban Phaeo salted fish is distinguished by unique traits resulting from the province's natural resources. The coastal lowland area's nutrient-rich brackish waters and traditional farming techniques contribute to the fish's light gray color, fine-grained, firm texture, and sweet taste when fried. The meticulous processing, from selection to sun-drying, results in a product free of muddy odors and perfect for premium markets. Annually, 8 million kilograms of Ban Phaeo salted fish are produced, generating up to 740 million baht for the local economy.
Ms. Oramon further emphasized that this GI registration aligns with the Ministry of Commerce's policy to systematically enhance the value of community-identified products. Efforts include establishing quality control systems, providing marketing knowledge, and developing modern packaging. The department aims to expand both online and offline marketing channels, showcasing the product in trade fairs and securing distribution in retail outlets nationwide. With its quality and unique local identity, Ban Phaeo salted fish holds potential for diversification into processed products and high-quality souvenirs, thus broadening market opportunities.
Furthermore, the Department is committed to transforming GI product sources into community tourism destinations, aligning with the "365 Days of Amazing Thailand: Travel Every Day" policy. This initiative seeks to boost high-value tourism by linking local products with tourism experiences, thereby generating income for local entrepreneurs year-round. Currently, Thailand boasts 256 registered GI products, contributing over 115,979 million baht in economic value to communities. The Department of Intellectual Property believes that the GI registration will enhance the promotion of Ban Phaeo salted fish, encouraging producers in Samut Sakhon to maintain high standards and develop their GI products further. This initiative will help distribute economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for local residents sustainably.
