Bangkok Police Ensure Smooth Election Registration Process Amid MP Candidacy

Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner revealed that there have been no incidents of unrest or complaints filed regarding the candidacy for Bangkok MP. He emphasized that the police are remaining neutral. Meanwhile, the Director of the Bangkok Election Commission warned candidates to be careful during their New Year campaigns, avoiding defamation, enticing voters with promises, or other misleading statements, as these could violate election laws.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Metropolitan Police Commissioner, along with Acting Sub-Lieutenant Sampan Saengkhamlert, Director of the Bangkok Election Commission Office, inspected the registration area. Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam stated that they had planned for facilitating the registration process, particularly regarding traffic and security, to ensure a smooth operation. They have also deployed intelligence to monitor any potential impact on the election. As of this morning, there have been no reports of any disturbances that could affect the registration. He noted that the large number of supporters is a normal and colorful aspect of elections, and there have been no clashes. He added that they will coordinate with the Election Commission regarding any additional police support needed. Finally, he instructed the officers on duty to remain neutral, emphasizing that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities, as this is not the first election of its kind.

Acting Sub-Lieutenant Sampan stated that the overall process of registering constituency MPs during the first half of the day went smoothly without any disruptions, thanks to the excellent cooperation from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the police. Some applicants who may have had issues with unclear documents have now had them corrected. Currently, there are 447 registered candidates for Bangkok MPs, which is expected to be close to the required number. This compares to approximately 497 candidates in the previous election. Some who have not yet registered may be still deciding and will register on the final day, as the Election Commission is still accepting registrations until December 31st, under the same standards and rules as before.

We reiterate that all candidates who have received their candidate numbers should exercise caution in their campaigning efforts under Section 73, especially during the New Year period. They should be wary of giving, offering, or promising any property or other benefits that can be calculated in monetary terms from anyone, including during entertainment events, and avoiding deception, misleading voters about their popularity. Currently, no complaints regarding these matters have been received.
