Bangkok Police Use Creative Tactics in Major Drug and Gambling Bust

Bangkok: Metropolitan police investigators, disguised as durian vendors, raided a drug and gambling den in a bold operation dubbed "Operation Durian Poison." The Bangkok Metropolitan Police executed this innovative strategy in the Udom Suk area, successfully arresting three suspects and seizing slot machines and crystal methamphetamine.

According to Thai News Agency, the operation, led by an officer identified as "Jae," was meticulously planned by the Narcotics Suppression and Prevention Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police. The target was a community behind a school in Soi Udomsuk 30, Bang Na district. The area posed significant challenges due to its multiple entry and exit points and tight surveillance against strangers. To overcome these obstacles, the team cleverly disguised themselves as durian vendors, utilizing a modified pickup truck to blend in while observing the target house. Despite nearly being discovered when a real customer attempted to buy durians, the investigators managed to execute the raid and apprehend the suspects.

The operation was initiated following complaints from parents who reported that their children, during school holidays, were leaving home under the pretense of attending school but were actually spending time with friends involved in drug activities.

Three individuals were arrested during the operation. Bang Dam, 42, faces charges related to organizing gambling and drug use. Ms. May, 32, is charged with organizing gambling, while Ms. Porn, 43, is charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine and drug use. In addition to the arrests, authorities seized two slot machines, crystal methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.

The initial investigation revealed that some suspects confessed to their involvement, claiming the slot machines belonged to others and were used to share profits. They also admitted to possessing drugs for personal use. Authorities are continuing to investigate the recruitment of minors in these activities.

All suspects were initially taken to Bang Na Police Station for legal proceedings. Authorities are urging the public to report any information about drug-related activities or other crimes to the hotline 1386 or 191 to aid in maintaining community safety.

During the raid, eight other individuals were found in the target house, including three 15-year-olds. No drugs were detected in their systems, and the youths claimed they were merely playing games with friends. As a result, authorities took appropriate steps according to child protection procedures.
