“Big Jok” Challenges Parliament Over Gold Case Evidence

Bangkok: "Big Jok," formally known as Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakpal, has taken decisive action by deploying his lawyer to caution the Speaker of Parliament regarding the handling of evidence in a controversial gold bribery case. Pol. Gen. Surachet, the former Deputy Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police, contends that the evidence against him is improperly handled and asserts his lack of concern over the matter.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sanyaphat Samart, the legal representative for Pol. Gen. Surachet, submitted an official letter to Mr. Mongkol Surasajja, President of the Senate and President of the Parliament. The letter highlights a statement from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), requesting an investigation into the police's alleged mishandling of the gold bribery case file. It argues that the investigation process could be unlawful, as it involves NACC commissioners, suggesting that it should have been initiated by the President of the Parliament under constitutional guidelines. The letter further warns that the police's acceptance of the case file back from the NACC might be seen as malicious prosecution.

The lawyer emphasized that the investigators did not possess the authority to investigate or submit the case file initially, rendering all subsequent evidence invalid. He warned that if the Speaker of Parliament accepted the file without a thorough investigation, it could lead to a constitutional violation. Additionally, he questioned why another police officer, who appeared in a video of the gold handover, has not been prosecuted.

Pol. Gen. Surachet, in a brief interview, assured that he remains unfazed and encouraged seeking further details from his lawyer. This situation arises amid widespread speculation that the case could escalate into a significant legal and political issue on a national scale.
