Bill Gates Cancels Attendance at AI Impact Summit Amid Controversy

New delhi: Bill Gates has canceled his participation in the AI Impact Summit in India. Microsoft founder Bill Gates has canceled his attendance at the AI Impact Summit in India just hours before his scheduled speech today.

According to Thai News Agency, the Gates Foundation announced that Mr. Gates will not be giving a speech, just days after denying rumors of his non-attendance and confirming he would attend as scheduled. This further exacerbates the already dire situation of this major Indian event, which is plagued by poor organization, malfunctioning robotic displays, and complaints from attendees about paralyzed traffic.

For today's meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is still scheduled to deliver a speech alongside world leaders and top technology executives, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

Before Gates withdrew from the event, Jensen Wang, co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, also withdrew, further reinforcing the negative image surrounding the launch of a major artificial intelligence summit where India was attempting to lead in shaping global AI governance. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Justice released emails last month detailing communications between Gates' Foundation staff and the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The documents indicate that the two met several times to discuss expanding philanthropic work, despite Gates maintaining that the relationship was limited to charitable work and admitting it was a mistake to become involved.

However, India's first AI conference has been less talked about for the innovations showcased and instead for its disorganized management, which shocked and angered attendees who felt the Indian government lacked proper planning. The abrupt closure of the exhibition hall to the public on Thursday further fueled outrage.

On Wednesday, Galgotias University was ordered to immediately dismantle its exhibition booth after staff members displayed a commercially available robotic dog from China, falsely claiming it as their own invention. The chaos also spread throughout New Delhi, with social media users criticizing the severe traffic congestion caused by road closures for the VIP motorcade. News footage showed many attendees walking miles through central New Delhi because there were no shuttle services and taxis were unavailable due to the road closures.
