Border Schools in Buriram Reopen Amid Safety Concerns

Buriram: Schools in the border areas of Buriram province have reopened for the first day of classes after a prolonged closure due to clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. Intensive evacuation drills were conducted, with schools practicing entering bomb shelters as part of a rear area protection plan to prepare for emergencies. Despite a ceasefire agreement, trust in Cambodia remains low.

According to Thai News Agency, the reopening follows a nearly month-long closure, and many schools have been focusing on safety measures. These include the use of bomb shelters to ensure the preparedness of both students and staff for any potential emergencies. However, there is a pressing need for additional funding, as some schools currently lack sufficient bomb shelters to accommodate all their students, which is crucial for guaranteeing the safety of everyone on campus.

In the Lahan Sai District of Buriram Province, a total of 34 schools resumed classes today. Surveys indicate that over 90% of students returned to school, while some families are still hesitant, opting to wait until they feel assured of safety before sending their children back to class. The need for improved infrastructure and safety measures remains a priority as schools navigate this period of transition.
