Bangkok: A recent revelation has raised questions over the allocation of funds by the Social Security Office in Thailand, where a study trip costing 148,000 baht has been organized, including activities such as karaoke and drinks. Mr. Pratthana Phodee, Chairman of the Thai Civil Servant Network and a member of the ad hoc committee drafting the Labor Protection Act, took to Facebook to question the appropriateness of this expenditure.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phodee's post highlighted ongoing issues within the Social Security Office, which is currently under scrutiny due to the 850 system being unusable. Staff members are reportedly working hard to re-enter data to meet the February 1st, 2026 deadline. Despite these pressing issues, some provincial Social Security offices have organized a weekend study trip with a budget allocation of 148,000 baht. This budget covers food, snacks, drinks, and beverages like Spy, a popular Thai drink. Concerns have been raised regarding whether this budget falls within the 10% allocation, and when the data system will be ready for use by insured individuals.
The staff's reluctance to participate in the trip stems from their desire to expedite data processing to ensure insured individuals receive their benefits promptly. Nevertheless, the office has proceeded with organizing the activity. A document, believed to be the schedule for the Social Security study trip, outlines the itinerary titled 'Experience the Mountains and Mist in Nong Khai Province, 2 Days 1 Night (Check-in January 31st - February 1st).'
The first day includes a visit to the Social Security Office, Wat Pho Chai, and a karaoke party. Participants will travel by VIP double-decker bus, engage in games during the journey, visit the Social Security Office in Nong Khai, stop at Wat Pho Chai to pay respects to Luang Pho Phra Sai, and stay at a hotel. The evening features a 'Jeans Party' with karaoke, six cases of Leo beer, and two cases of Spy wine.
On the second day, the group will wake up at 5 AM to witness the mist at Phu Huai Isan, followed by visits to Wat Pa Ban Tat and Bank Benjamas Garden. The total cost of the trip is 148,000 THB, with 39 people participating.
