Bus Crash in Nayarit Claims 11 Lives, Leaves 31 Injured

Nayarit: A bus crashed on a highway in Mexico, killing at least 11 people. A tragic accident on Friday, May 1, in the western Mexican state of Nayarit, resulted in at least 11 deaths and 31 injuries during the Labor Day weekend on Friday, May 1.

According to Thai News Agency, the Nayarit state government stated that the bus was traveling from Jalisco state before veering off the road, crashing off the highway, and overturning near the town of Amatl¡n de Ca±as. Local officials revealed that the group of passengers was traveling to a recreation center in the state of Nayarit. Following the accident, rescue teams from both Nayarit and Jalisco states rushed to the scene to provide assistance and closed traffic routes to investigate the cause of the accident. Photographs released by the Nayarit state government show the bus overturned on its side.

Serious bus accidents are frequent on highways throughout Mexico and Latin America. Last September, at least 10 people died and more than 61 were injured in the central region after a freight train collided with a double-decker bus. Furthermore, in February 2025, a tragic accident occurred in southern Mexico when a bus traveling from Cancun to Tabasco collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in a fire that killed more than 40 people.

Buses remain the primary mode of public transportation in Mexico due to limited passenger rail networks. However, the government under President Claudia Chenbaum is accelerating projects to expand the nationwide passenger rail network to better connect northern and central Mexico.
