Bangkok: The Cabinet has sanctioned the draft cooperation plan between Thailand and the International Energy Agency (IEA) for the years 2026-2027, aiming to bolster energy security and expedite the transition towards clean energy.

According to Thai News Agency, this plan, proposed by Thailand's Ministry of Energy, seeks to enhance the country's energy capabilities over the forthcoming two years, focusing on crucial areas.

Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the approved plan permits the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, or a designated representative, to formalize the agreement in Paris, France, between February 17-18, 2026. The initiative continues previous collaborations and targets multiple facets such as the exchange of energy data, preparation for energy emergencies, promotion of energy efficiency, and the development of energy policies.

The plan also emphasizes expanding renewable energy, electricity systems, digital technologies, and engaging in low-carbon energy technologies and greenhouse gas emission reduction. Additionally, it involves regional and global cooperation, preparation of energy outlook reports, reviewing ASEAN's energy security, personnel exchanges, and ongoing enhancement of Thailand's energy capabilities.

Ms. Lalida clarified that this framework is policy and academic in nature, devoid of any binding international legal obligations, and does not impose obligations on the subsequent cabinet. The Ministry of Energy has already earmarked the necessary budget for its activities. This collaboration is poised to advance Thailand's energy management, align energy policies with global trends, reinforce energy security, and expedite the clean energy transition, targeting net-zero emissions while supporting sustainable economic growth.
