Phnom penh: The border situation is tense as Cambodia reinforces its forces and burns forests along the entire border. The situation on the Thai-Cambodian border is becoming increasingly tense after Cambodia reinforced its troops and continued to burn forests along the border, in an attempt to provoke Thai soldiers. This is believed to be a retaliation for Thailand's potential cancellation of MOU 44 and the construction of a border fence.
According to Thai News Agency, the situation on the Thai-Cambodian border has become tense again after this week saw continuous activity from Cambodian soldiers burning forests along the border. The Army Military Force Facebook page posted images of forest fires in several border areas, such as O'Semed, stating that Cambodian soldiers were setting fires to harass Thai troops. Strong winds carried the smoke and flames rapidly over the barbed wire fence of Thai military bases, resulting in thick smoke that irritated the eyes of Thai soldiers, making it impossible for them to remain in their positions.
Aerial images reveal thick white smoke covering the border area, identified as forest fires set by Cambodian soldiers in an attempt to disrupt and obstruct visibility for Thai troops. Meanwhile, Cambodian soldiers stationed near Preah Vihear temple posted video footage from atop the temple showing smoke and areas of forest fires, claiming that Thailand had started forest fires again.
However, there is clear evidence that the forest fires along the border were carried out by Cambodian soldiers, as they posted the pictures and admitted that they were burning the forests for the benefit of the people, stating that the people of Siem Reap hate the heat. The forest fires caused a blaze that spread into a temple area in Preah Vihear province, with reports indicating the fire originated from Cambodian soldiers. The fire also spread to their own military base, causing damage.
In addition to the provocative forest fires aimed at Thai soldiers, images of Cambodian troops reinforcing their presence in border areas have surfaced. These include photos of Cambodian soldiers on trucks and videos posted by Cambodian military journalists showing Cambodian troops gathering with captions such as "Our soldiers wave the national flag as a symbol of unity, struggle, and sacrifice for the ideals of our nation," along with images of Cambodian soldiers digging trenches and patrolling to monitor Thai troops. This has caused tensions to rise again along the Thai-Cambodian border. Reports indicate that these Cambodian troop movements are a retaliation for Thailand's impending cancellation of MOU 44 and the construction of a border fence.
And most recently, at around 2:39 AM, the Army Military Force Facebook page posted a video of Cambodian soldiers, refusing to sleep, setting fire to the forest on the front line in Chom Kasan District, Preah Vihear Province, once again.
