Tumbler ridge: Following a mass shooting in Canada that killed nine people before taking its own life, police have confirmed that the perpetrator was an 18-year-old transgender woman with a mental illness. The motive for the attack has not yet been determined.
According to Thai News Agency, Canadian police have released the latest details of one of the largest mass shootings in the country's history, at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in western Canada. The perpetrator, 18-year-old Jesse Vanrutzelaar, took her own life after the incident. It is believed she acted alone, with no other suspects involved. She was born male and began living as a female six years prior.
Police confirmed that over the years, officers had been providing care for the perpetrator's family due to her mental health issues. She then committed the murders of her 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old half-brother at their home before proceeding to the high school to commit further killings. Police also revised the number of victims at the high school down from the previously reported seven to six: one female teacher, three female students, and two male students. At least two people sustained serious or life-threatening injuries, and 25 others suffered minor injuries. This tragedy forced Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to cancel his important trip to the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He declared a day of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast, and stated that he was deeply saddened by the shooting and offered prayers for the families and friends who lost loved ones. He added that Canada would overcome this tragedy and learn from it.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote municipality with a population of approximately 2,400, located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in northern British Columbia. It is a small, close-knit community.
This event is one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history. The deadliest mass shooting occurred in 2000, when a 51-year-old man, disguised as a police officer, drove a fake police car and opened fire, killing 22 people over a 13-hour period in Nova Scotia on the Atlantic coast before being shot and killed by police.
The deadliest school shooting occurred in 1989, when a gunman killed 14 female students and injured 13 others at a polytechnic school in Montreal, Quebec, before taking his own life.
