Bangkok:Central Region: Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Industry and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Flood and Drought Prevention and Mitigation in the Tha Chin River Basin, participated in a key meeting of the Central Region Committee on Flood and Drought Prevention and Mitigation for 2026. The meeting, led by Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, focused on enhancing flood management strategies and preparedness.
According to Thai News Agency, the committee reviewed the current flood situation, weather forecasts, and water management across major river basins, including the Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, Mae Klong, and Phetchaburi-Prachuap Khiri Khan. The meeting assessed the challenges faced by provinces in the central region and discussed necessary support measures.
The committee emphasized the need for a centralized approach to weather forecasting, urging all relevant agencies to consolidate rainfall data into a single dataset for more accurate predictions. This includes managing water inflow and outflow, integrating rainwater and runoff management along waterways, and adjusting dam release plans to optimize water discharge into the Gulf of Thailand. High-risk areas were identified to enable effective local preparation, and solutions for inter-provincial flooding, particularly in Pathum Thani, Nakhon Nayok, and the Rangsit Canal, were prioritized.
To ensure efficient response, resources have been allocated for advance warnings, with a focus on providing 4-5 days’ notice to the public. This includes preparing water pumps, machinery, sandbags, and evacuation centers. The war room has been upgraded to an action-oriented center, designed to facilitate real-time decision-making and problem-solving using a basin-based operational structure.
