Chairman Sophon Advocates for Five Key Local Government Laws

Bangkok: Chairman Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament and Speaker of the House of Representatives, took a significant step forward by welcoming three local associations to discuss the revival of five critical laws that were previously stalled.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sophon met with Mr. Visut Chongchuwani, Mayor of Borabue Subdistrict Municipality and President of the Association of Municipalities of Thailand, alongside representatives from the Association of Provincial Administrative Organizations of Thailand and the Association of Subdistrict Administrative Organizations of Thailand. The meeting focused on reconsidering five draft bills under Section 147 of the 2017 Constitution, which had been rejected during the Senate's review.

The proposed draft bills pertain to crucial aspects of local government administration, including local elections, provincial and sub-district councils, and local personnel regulations. Notable provisions within these drafts aim to adjust candidate qualifications, reduce the minimum age for candidacy, abolish term limits for local administrators, and revise both qualifications and disqualifications. Additionally, they seek to revoke the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Order No. 8/2017. If passed, these laws are expected to improve local administration efficiency, enhance public service delivery, and support the continuous and sustainable implementation of government policies.

Mr. Sophon emphasized that enacting such legislation is the most effective way for local leaders to serve the public interest. As Speaker of Parliament, he expressed his unwavering support for these legislative efforts, advocating for transparency and sustainability in governance.
