Beijing: A senior Chinese official overseeing Taiwan policy said on Tuesday that the Chinese government would support "nationalist reunification groups" in Taiwan and would crack down hard on "separatist" groups.
According to Thai News Agency, China's official Xinhua news agency reported that at the annual Taiwan Work Conference, Wang Hu-ning, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party Central Committee and the party's fourth-highest ranking leader, emphasized to officials the necessity to push forward the great task of reunification. He stated that it is crucial to support patriotic groups advocating reunification in Taiwan, while resolutely suppressing separatist forces seeking Taiwanese independence and opposing external interference to safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Despite continuous opposition from the Taiwanese government, China continues to consider Taiwan part of its territory and has increased military and political pressure to affirm its sovereignty over the land, proposing a "one country, two systems" governance model. However, no major political party in Taiwan has yet accepted this proposal.
The meeting was also attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, underscoring China's view of the Taiwan issue as a key agenda item to be pursued on the international stage, while the Taiwanese government consistently insists that only the people on the island can decide their own future.
The Chinese government has repeatedly warned the international community, including the United States, not to interfere in the Taiwan issue, as it is an internal affair of China.
