Yunnan: A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed on Saturday that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet with the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia in Yunnan province, southwestern China, on Sunday and Monday.
According to Thai News Agency, the website of the Chinese Communist Party's China Daily reported late last night that a Foreign Ministry spokesman issued an online statement saying that Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeo and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn will each bring a delegation to meet in China at the invitation of Wang Yi. The invitation followed separate phone conversations with the two officials on December 18. During these conversations, the ministers discussed the renewed border conflict that erupted on December 7, resulting in casualties, and expressed their willingness to de-escalate tensions and achieve a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the Global Times website, affiliated with the People's Daily newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, reported on the same day that military delegations from all three countries would participate in the discussions. This meeting is set to take place in Yunnan Province on December 29-30 at the invitation of the Chinese Foreign Minister.
Global Times also reported that since the renewed tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, China has been closely monitoring the situation and taking concrete measures to de-escalate it. Wang Yi held telephone conversations with Mr. Sihasak and Mr. Prak Sokonn on December 18th, while Deng Xijun, China's Special Envoy for Asia, visited Thailand and Cambodia from December 18-23. Both countries expressed gratitude to China for its continued support of peace negotiations in a manner acceptable to all parties and pledged to maintain close communication with China, jointly de-escalate tensions, and restore peace and stability in the border area as soon as possible.
