China Prosecutes Former Defense Agency Deputy Director on Corruption Charges

Beijing: China is prosecuting a former high-ranking military officer on corruption charges. The government has intensified its crackdown on corruption within the military and related industries by prosecuting Zhang Jianhua, a former deputy director of the defense industry regulatory agency, on charges of bribery and abuse of power.

According to Thai News Agency, Zhang is accused of accepting bribes and using his influence to gain illicit benefits. The Supreme Prosecutor's Office revealed that the value of the assets involved was "exceptionally high." Zhang, 64, allegedly used his positions within the National Defense Science, Technology and Industry Administration to benefit others.

Zhang's career spans nearly 40 years, starting at China North Industries Group, a state-owned arms manufacturer. He later advanced to positions in regulatory agencies, including head of the project review center and overseeing the finance and auditing department. China's top anti-corruption agency launched an investigation into Zhang after he surrendered in May 2025. Subsequently, he was expelled from the Communist Party of China in October of the same year.
