Bangkok: China is aggressively expanding its “snow industry” with the ambition of surpassing 1 trillion yuan in value and attracting 300 million tourists by 2026. The country’s primary mission is focused on increasing domestic demand by boosting consumption and tourism through the development of the snow and ice industry.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Siwatra Sinphasuthadol, Thai Language Section Officer of the Asia-Africa Center at China Central Television (CCT), shared insights on the Good Morning ASEAN program on MCOT NEWS FM 100.5. She discussed China’s strategic efforts to stimulate winter tourism by planning to exceed 1 trillion yuan in consumption by the end of the year. The initiative includes expanding the number of indoor ski resorts to 79 nationwide, which represent 33.9% of resorts, even in regions with warmer climates, thanks to artificial snow systems.
Ms. Siwatra also highlighted new tourism trends in China focusing on immersive experiences that integrate cultural elements with winter activities. In Kai City, Henan Province, tourists can engage in experiences reminiscent of the Song Dynasty era, while Beijing offers period costume shows in restaurants. Additionally, Zhejiang hosts winter food and sports festivals to attract visitors.
Further innovations include events like the Cyberg Football League, a snow soccer tournament featuring 24 teams, and a New Year’s Eve concert in Harbin, a city that previously generated 137.22 billion yuan from nearly 100 million tourists in the early part of last year.
Ms. Siwatra advised Thailand to capitalize on the winter season to attract Chinese tourists by developing new and innovative attractions beyond traditional beach destinations. She emphasized that despite ongoing political tensions, Chinese tourists continue to favor Japan for its distinct appeal, suggesting that Thailand should emulate Singapore and Laos by improving infrastructure and offering unique experiences.
For Thai tourists planning trips to China, Ms. Siwatra advised being prepared for extremely cold weather that could impact health, particularly for those with conditions such as hypertension. The strengthening Thai baht, valued at approximately 4.4 yuan per baht, presents a favorable travel opportunity. However, she also recommended keeping an eye on the over 100 incentives and discount coupons offered by the Chinese government to promote tourism during this period.
