Commerce Ministry Calls for Price Freeze on Pork, Chicken, and Eggs During Festivities

Bangkok: The Commerce Ministry has reached out to livestock farmers and traders, urging them to freeze the prices of pork, chicken, and eggs during the Mid-Autumn Festival. This appeal aims to alleviate financial pressures on the public during this festive period.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Internal Trade is also engaging with livestock farmers and traders to maintain stable prices during the Chinese Ghost Festival. Deputy Director-General of the Department, Mr. Jirawut Suwannach, held a meeting with key stakeholders, including farmer organizations and major business operators involved in the production and trade of these essential items. The discussions centered around strategies for balancing market conditions to prevent economic strain on both producers and consumers.

Currently, the farm-gate price for live pigs stands at 72-74 baht per kilogram, reflecting an increase from the previous month due to a diminished market supply. Prices are predicted to experience a slight rise in the coming weeks before stabilizing and potentially decreasing in mid-September, as the Vegetarian Festival commences, typically reducing pork demand.

To ensure compliance, the Department of Internal Trade has committed to monitoring pork, chicken, and egg prices closely. Vendors found selling these goods at inflated prices risk legal action under the Price Control and Services Act B.E. 2542 (1999). Violators may face fines up to 140,000 baht, imprisonment for up to 7 years, or both. Consumers can report pricing violations through the Department's hotline at 1569.
