Bangkok: The Democrat Party (DP) organized a forum to gather insights from animal rights experts to advocate amendments to the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act, aiming to extend protections to wild animals.
According to Thai News Agency, the forum titled "A Whole Elephant is Dead, Don't Cover It Up with Lotus Leaves" was held at the party headquarters, bringing together experts and activists to discuss wildlife protection in Thailand.
Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the DP, stated that the forum was a platform for gathering opinions from various sectors on public policy issues. The event provided a chance to hear from knowledgeable speakers offering diverse perspectives, especially amid the current uncertain political climate. Abhisit emphasized the party's commitment to closely monitor societal issues and engage in realistic approaches to problem-solving.
The forum addressed the challenges faced by wild elephants in conflict zones, with suggestions for amending animal cruelty laws to include wild animals. Mr. Teerapat Trangprakarn, Dr. Phadet Siridamrong, Ms. Narakorn Tiyanon, and Mr. Roger Lohanan were among the key speakers who highlighted legal loopholes and the necessity for concrete protections for wild animals.
The panelists discussed the need for scientifically sound management practices for elephants, the importance of veterinary SOPs, and the role of transparent communication in government actions. They also pointed out that the current legal framework fails to comprehensively cover wild animals, urging legislative amendments to ensure their protection.
Attorney Ple Sirikwan Nilkarn, a DP candidate and animal rights lawyer, highlighted the inconsistencies in the enforcement of animal cruelty laws, stressing the need for clearer regulations for wild animals. The seminar concluded with Mr. Abhisit outlining three key initiatives for wildlife welfare, emphasizing the need for authentic knowledge, social awareness, and effective legal mechanisms.
