Bangkok: The Department of Climate Change Mitigation (DCGM) is spearheading an initiative to enhance the nationwide community waste database in collaboration with the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ). This effort aims to support the transition to sustainable waste disposal technologies and achieve international transparency in the waste sector.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), in partnership with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) and with support from GIZ in Thailand, organized a workshop that convened experts from over 33 central and local agencies. The workshop focused on improving the collection of activity data from waste disposal sites, a move intended to drive the adoption of sustainable waste management technologies and ensure transparent reporting under the Paris Agreement.
Mr. Pawich Kesawong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, led the workshop titled 'Enhancing Waste Disposal Site Data Management for Sustainable Waste Disposal Technology Transition' at the Best Western Hotel, Chatuchak. He emphasized the importance of the meeting in fostering a shared understanding between central and local authorities for creating an accurate database to assess greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative aims to transition waste management technologies from traditional open dump systems to more efficient and sustainable ones, following Thailand's submission of the Biennial Transparency Report No. 1 (BTR1) and the subsequent review by UNFCCC experts.
The workshop, supported by the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Partnership, took place from April 29th to May 1st, 2026. Participants were educated on waste management technologies in accordance with Pollution Control Department guidelines. They also explored technological adaptations to enhance waste management at landfill sites, learned methods for calculating greenhouse gas emissions and reductions based on IPCC 2006 principles, and engaged in practical exercises to evaluate and improve waste disposal in their areas. A site visit to the On Nut waste-to-energy project provided hands-on experience. The insights gained will aid in improving waste data reporting and facilitating the efficient transition of waste management technologies, ultimately contributing to the achievement of NDC greenhouse gas reduction targets and the sustainable improvement of community health.
