Bangkok: Dr. Chonlanan expresses concern that Thais are confused about the new constitutional referendum due to insufficient public awareness campaigns by the government and the Election Commission. He urges verification of the eligibility of those registered for advance voting. Dr. Chonlanan Srikaew, a candidate for Member of Parliament in Constituency 2 of Nan Province, commented on the referendum asking the public whether they approve of drafting a new constitution, scheduled for February 8, 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, although Parliament has already voted to hold a referendum, many people are still unaware of the information because they believe the government and the Election Commission (EC) have done very little public relations work. Meanwhile, most political parties have not seriously campaigned on this issue, with the exception of the Pheu Thai Party, which has set up a committee to campaign for public participation in voting.
While it should be noted that 1,264,103 people registered to vote in advance outside their district, the relevant agencies should verify whether this group also registered to vote in the referendum outside their district to avoid any issues of lost voting rights or confusion.
However, Dr. Chonlanan emphasized that the referendum result is the people's decision. If the majority does not approve of drafting a new constitution, amending the 2017 constitution to pave the way for a new draft will not be possible.
