Drunk Driving Accounts for 94% of New Year’s Day Traffic Incidents

Bangkok: The Department of Probation has highlighted a significant issue concerning road safety during the "7-Day Intensive New Year 2026" period. The department reported that a total of 4,794 cases entered the probation process between December 30, 2025, and January 5, 2026. Alarmingly, driving under the influence of alcohol made up the majority of these cases, with 4,531 incidents, representing 94.51% of the total. Other offenses included driving under the influence of drugs, which accounted for 256 cases, and reckless driving, with only 5 instances.

According to Thai News Agency, there has been a notable decrease of over 28% in alcohol-related driving cases compared to the same period last year. The three provinces recording the highest number of such cases were Nonthaburi, Bangkok, and Samut Prakan.

During the enforcement period, probation officers across the country were actively engaged in supporting public services at 296 different locations. This effort was bolstered by the involvement of over 3,000 volunteers, probationers, and network members, who participated in a range of activities. Additionally, driver behavior was monitored in real-time using CCTV cameras to mitigate the risk of road accidents.

Offenders convicted of drunk driving and placed on probation are required to undergo an assessment of their drinking behavior. Those identified as high-risk are advised to undergo treatment and must adhere to conditions such as regular reporting and participating in road safety-related community service. Non-compliance will lead to the Department of Probation notifying the court for further legal action. This initiative aims to lower repeat offenses and promote a safer society.
