Education Minister Orders Closure of Schools Near Surin Border Amid Clashes

Surin: The Minister of Education has mandated the closure of schools along the Surin border following clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, implementing a refuge plan to protect students and establish a shelter for students and their families.

According to Thai News Agency, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat, the Minister of Education, disclosed that she received a report concerning the unrest stemming from clashes between security forces on the Thai-Cambodian border near the Ta Muen Thom temple area in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province. This conflict has posed a threat to the safety of students and educational personnel in the vicinity.

For the protection of students, teachers, and staff, the Education Minister has directed the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to keep a close watch on the situation, collaborate with local security agencies, and temporarily shut down all schools in the affected regions.

‘I have urged border schools to develop a systematic response plan, especially preparing bunkers or safe areas for students, including setting up temporary shelters in safe areas to accommodate students and families who may have to evacuate from risk areas,’ said Prof. Dr. Narumon.

The Ministry of Education will continuously assess the situation in collaboration with security agencies and will consider reopening schools as usual when the situation improves to ensure minimal disruption to students’ long-term learning.
