Election Commission Issues Guidelines for Online Media During Election Campaign

Bangkok: The Election Commission has confirmed that online media outlets are not required to delete existing posts on election day, but they are prohibited from posting new content. The Secretary-General of the Election Commission, Mr. Saeng Boonmee, highlighted the importance of providing equal opportunities for all parties in campaigning and debates.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Saeng chaired a meeting involving the Election Commission Office, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, the Public Relations Department, and executives from radio and television stations. The purpose was to discuss guidelines for supporting election campaign advertising for Members of Parliament. The meeting aimed to set criteria and procedures in line with Section 81 of the 2018 Act on the Election of Members of Parliament, which mandates the Election Commission to aid in campaign advertising.

The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has outlined that campaign advertisements for each political party can be aired between January 26th and 30th, from 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM, with a total duration not exceeding 60 minutes. Additionally, policy debates organized by the ECT are restricted to 60 minutes and scheduled between February 2nd and 6th. Each party's advertisement content will be reviewed by the ECT and submitted to relevant stations by January 21st.

It was stressed that any media outlet wishing to host a forum must invite all political parties to ensure equal and fair dissemination of information. This approach will ensure that all political parties and candidates receive adequate airtime within the legal framework, promoting access to accurate information for the public to make informed voting decisions.

Regarding social media and online media content, the Secretary-General confirmed that existing posts do not need to be deleted after the campaign period, but no new content should be created following the campaign's conclusion.
