Bangkok: The Secretary-General of the Election Commission confirmed that political parties purchasing media for campaigning must have receipts. Failure to do so constitutes a violation of the Election Act. Regarding the leaked Line chat messages about purchasing media, he requested time for investigation.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Saeng Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission, addressed the leaked LINE messages within a political party that revealed the names of several media outlets involved in media purchases without going through the organization and without receipts. Mr. Saeng stated that the procedures followed were likely improper. However, he requested time to investigate further. He declined to provide further details at this time, but added that according to election law, political parties and candidates must disclose details of their campaign expenses, and these expenses must comply with the law.
Regarding the absence of receipts, Mr. Saeng stated that evidence must be submitted to the Election Commission (EC). Failure to do so will be considered false reporting, which could result in the revocation of voting rights. He explained that it's impossible for a political party to campaign using media space without receipts, as they are required to list at least two expenses: the party-list and the referendum expenses. All details must be recorded. Campaigns involving both aspects must include all relevant evidence and receipts, which must be submitted to the EC. The EC is responsible for verifying the identity of the political party involved.
