Bangkok: The Minister of Energy has taken decisive action to coordinate with security agencies in response to a series of bombings and arson attacks targeting gas stations in the southern border provinces
According to Thai News Agency, Energy Minister Attapol Rerkpiboon has been actively monitoring the situation following the incidents that occurred late last night, affecting 11 gas stations across three provinces.
Minister Rerkpiboon emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the public, gas station owners, and employees. He highlighted the critical role of fuel as a national security commodity and a basic necessity, stressing the need to prevent shortages. To this end, he has coordinated efforts with security agencies to safeguard gas stations and maintain an uninterrupted fuel supply for the public.
In a concerted effort to address the situation, the Ministry of Energy and the Department of Energy Business have been instructed to collaborate with unaffected nearby gas stations to boost the sale of alternative fuels. The affected gas stations, all operated by PTT's subsidiary OR, are under increased security measures in coordination with security agencies.
The Provincial Energy Offices in the three provinces are actively working with security agencies to inspect the affected areas. Once security clearance is granted, further inspections will be conducted. The Department of Energy Business and OR are poised to support restoration efforts as quickly as possible.
Despite the attacks, joint assessments with stakeholders have determined that public access to fuel remains unaffected at present, as other service stations in the area continue to meet the demand. The incidents occurred between 00:45 and 01:30 on January 11, 2069, with explosions reported at the following locations:
- Narathiwat Province: 5 PTT gas stations in Cho Airong, Chanae, Ra-ngae, Waeng, and Suai Ngai Kolok districts.
- Pattani Province: 2 PTT gas stations in Mueang and Kapho districts.
- Yala Province: 4 PTT gas stations in Kabang, Bannang Sata, Mueang Yala, and Ban Bukeh Khala districts.
The situation remains under close surveillance as authorities work to secure the affected areas and ensure the safety of the community and fuel supply.
