Emerald Triangle: In the region known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand converge, the long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has once again intensified. At the core of this century-old conflict are contested border lines and competing claims over several temple sites.
According to Deutsche Welle, the border between Thailand and Cambodia stretches over 800 kilometers (500 miles), a demarcation partly left over from colonial times. Several temples within this border region are of significant cultural and historical value, leading to disputes that have persisted since the 20th century. One of the latest claims, which has garnered considerable attention, alleges that Cambodia is utilizing these ancient sites for military purposes.
A viral claim on social media platform X, posted on July 31, urges users to spread the news that Cambodia is allegedly using ancient temple sites as military bases, constructing bunkers, and thereby violating international conventions and UNESCO principles. The post, which includes two photographs and a similar text, has over 1 million views and has been shared widely on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. The text accompanying the photos asserts, “Sacred Heritage Site Turned into Military Base – A Clear Violation of International Conventions,” and uses the hashtag “Prasat Ta Kwai,” referencing a temple located in the disputed border region.
