Former Provincial Governor Chamroen Found Guilty of Amassing Illicit Wealth

Bangkok: The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has determined that Chamroen Tipnyapongthada, a former governor of four provinces, illegally amassed wealth amounting to 321,670,858.30 baht during his tenure as a government official.

According to Thai News Agency, the NACC's Secretary-General, Surapong Intarathaworn, announced the findings against Mr. Chamroen, who served as governor in Phuket, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phang Nga, and Satun provinces. The investigation revealed that his assets were significantly disproportionate to his income, with no legitimate source provided for the wealth held in his name, as well as in the names of his spouse and minor children.

The amassed assets include a personal bank account with 1,488,514.80 baht, 13 bank accounts in his spouse's name totaling 260,846,734.80 baht, and 22 land and building items valued at 47,445,608.70 baht. Additionally, one property registered under a minor child is valued at 5,690,000 baht, along with six vehicles worth 6,200,000 baht registered in his spouse's name.

The NACC concluded that Mr. Chamroen's wealth was acquired through illegal means while fulfilling his official duties, leading to an abnormal increase in assets. The commission has resolved to forward the investigation details to the Attorney General to pursue legal action for the forfeiture of the assets to the state. Furthermore, the case will be referred to Mr. Chamroen's superiors for potential disciplinary action, including dismissal, under the 2018 Act on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption. In instances where the full forfeiture is not possible, the NACC may seek a court order to enforce the judgment against other assets of the accused within a ten-year period.

Mr. Chamroen resigned from his position as Governor of Satun Province on April 10, 2023, concluding his government service.
