Bangkok: Olar Thinbangtiao, a political analyst, highlights a significant shift in political dynamics as Gen Z leans towards the Orange Party, impacting the traditional voting patterns.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Olar Thinbangtiao, a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science and Law, Burapha University, shared insights on the upcoming 2026 general election during the "Share the News" program on MCOT NEWS FM 100.5. He observed that the Democrat Party is currently leading the race, followed by the Bhumjaithai Party and the Pheu Thai Party. The Democrat Party's increasing social media presence, influenced by prominent figures like Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, indicates its growing popularity. However, the New Gen Z group, composed of approximately 3.4 million new voters, is not guaranteed to support the Democrat Party as they did in 2023 due to emerging concerns around national security and patriotism.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olar perceives the political landscape as a contest between "popularity" and "funding." While influential local families' networks remain robust, the Kla Tham Party is losing traction due to the absence of a distinct ideology. Meanwhile, 20-30% of the electorate remains undecided, making them a crucial demographic for parties to target in the final stages of the campaign. Political strategies are evolving from academic policy discussions to marketing tactics that include discounts, giveaways, and nationalist appeals in a bid to attract voters.
In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olar stressed the significance of a referendum on the new draft constitution, considering it more critical than enduring political structural changes like elections. He clarified that this referendum is unrelated to amending Article 112 of the Criminal Code.
