General Prawit’s Resignation from Palang Pracharath Party Leadership Will Not Impact Candidates

Bangkok: The Election Commission has confirmed that the resignation of General Prawit Wongsuwan as leader of the Palang Pracharath Party will not affect the parliamentary candidates. The Secretary-General of the Election Commission emphasized that every position can be filled by a replacement.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Saweang Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission (EC), addressed concerns regarding the impact of General Prawit Wongsuwan's resignation on parliamentary candidates. Although he was not aware of the resignation, he elaborated on the legal framework, stating that a political party operates as an organization or institution, a legal entity. Consequently, when a person resigns from a position within the party, a replacement is always designated. Amid the ongoing election period, the party leader's role involves certifying parliamentary candidates for both constituency and party-list seats. This certification is finalized at the time of registration. Therefore, the resignation will not have any impact, as a replacement or interim leader will be appointed in accordance with the Political Parties Act and party regulations.

Mr. Saeng also highlighted that the law clearly outlines the timeframe within which a replacement must be found when a position becomes vacant. In cases where a replacement is not immediately available, an acting replacement will be appointed as per the party regulations.
