Bangkok: The government has issued a directive for registrars across the country to strictly enforce gun control measures, including the suspension of P.12 license issuance. Administrative officials are tasked with conducting random inspections to ensure compliance with these regulations.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has mandated a comprehensive review of the firearms control system. The Department of Provincial Administration, under the Ministry of Interior, has responded by issuing urgent instructions emphasizing the necessity of strict firearms control to safeguard public safety.
The measures include increased scrutiny of applicants for firearms purchase licenses (Form P.3). Local registrars are instructed to meticulously verify applicants' qualifications and examine their backgrounds for any involvement in illegal activities. Additionally, authorities will monitor current licensees (Form P.4) to ensure compliance with legal standards, coordinating with community leaders and the public to enforce these regulations.
The Ministry of Interior continues to uphold the temporary suspension of firearms permit issuance (Form P.12), a policy in effect since December 20, 2023. This suspension aims to mitigate the risk of crime and violence in public spaces. Officials are explicitly prohibited from issuing firearm permits to the general public under this directive.
Ms. Airin emphasized that carrying firearms in public places without valid reason constitutes an offense under the Criminal Code and Firearms Act. Even licensed firearm holders (Form P.4) must keep their weapons at home unless urgently necessary. Violators may face up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.
