Government Warns of Severe Penalties for Illegal SIM Card Activation

Bangkok: The government reiterates that hiring someone to activate a "sim card" (a type of automated system) carries a maximum prison sentence of 3 years. The warning highlights that procuring, advertising, or soliciting the purchase, rental, or lending of illegal SIM cards can lead to a penalty of up to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to 500,000 baht.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government is intensifying its efforts to combat cybercrime, which poses a significant threat to the nation. She pointed out the damage caused by call center scams, noting that some individuals are complicit in these activities by opening fake bank accounts. Ms. Airin issued a strong warning to the public, particularly young people, against accepting payments to activate SIM cards or providing personal information to criminals.

Ms. Airin explained that under the Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Act B.E. 2566 (amended version No. 2 B.E. 2568), hiring someone to activate a SIM card or allowing the use of a SIM card registered in one's name could be considered an offense if linked to criminal activities. The penalties include imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 300,000 baht. For those involved in the procurement or solicitation related to SIM cards, electronic cards, or accounts, the penalties are harsher, with imprisonment from 2 to 5 years or fines ranging from 200,000 to 500,000 baht.

The government, along with other agencies, continues to crack down on unauthorized SIM card registrations. They are urging the public not to use personal information or facial scans for registering SIM cards on behalf of others. Citizens are encouraged to report any unauthorized use of their personal information or any online fraud to the authorities via thaipoliceonline or by calling the Anti Online Scam Operation Center's 24-hour hotline at 1441.
